Citizens Police Academy

What is the Chaska Citizen Police Academy?

This is an eight session program in which people learn about police work in Chaska by experiencing police work.  Lectures are kept to a minimum and actual hands-on experiences are kept to a maximum.  For example citizens;

  • make shoot/no-shoot decisions in simulated exercises.
  • make felony traffic stops.
  • role play in domestic disputes.
  • search for hidden fingerprints while processing a crime scene.
  • role play in a police interrogation.
  • visit the jail and experience a lockup.
  • process a drunk driver.
  • learn to recognize illegal drugs and undercover operations.

Why is the Police Department providing an Academy?

We want to increase partnerships with those in our community and create opportunities to receive feedback from participants to improve our delivery of services.  Often there is little opportunity for the average citizen to have police contact without having a need or problem to solve.  The academy offers an opportunity for both citizens and officers to share views and ideas.

Who may attend?

Each academy is limited to twenty people.  Participants must be at least 18 years of age and either live in Chaska or own a Chaska business.

Who are the presenters?

Police Officers

Cost?

None.  All associated costs are covered.

Graduation

Participants who attend at least seven of the eight sessions will receive a certificate of attendance and a special shirt identifying them as an academy graduate.

NOTE:  Graduation does not result in the attendee becoming qualified as a police officer.

Call (952) 448-4200 for more information on the next Academy session and with any questions.
